Great Exercise with a “Twist”!

Robin Ishibashi Jones, Stonebridge HomeFit

One of the best exercises to strengthen and tone your legs is the LUNGE!  To make this exercise even better, I have added a little “twist” to make it more challenging and more productive!  Let’s get started!

 Lunge and Twist Combo

Stand tall on both feet and reach your arms out in front of you with palms together. Take a big step forward with your right foot and bend both knees so that they are bent at 90 degree angles (this will gauge the size of your step!). The left knee should be 2-5 inches off the ground. With your arms still out in front of you and while holding the lunge position, twist slightly to the left and then to the right and back to the center. Think of the numbers on a clock and twist to “10 o’clock” and then over to “2 o’clock” then finally back to “12 o’clock”! Pushing through the heel of your foot and maintaining an engaged core, strongly push back to standing position keeping the arms outstretched.  Switch sides.  Repeat 10 – 15 times on each leg.

To make this exercise even more challenging, try holding a dumbbell, medicine ball, or even a bottle of water in your hands!

Best wishes in your continued health and fitness success!
