Keiro joins Nisei Week Foundation in saluting Congressional Gold Medal recipients and Japanese American World War II veterans, including Keiro founder George Aratani! In recognition of 50 years of service and commitment to our community, Keiro founders were also named as 2011 Nisei Week Honorary Grand Marshals.
In 1961, George Aratani, Edwin Hiroto, Kiyoshi Maruyama, James Mitsumori, Gongoro Nakamura, Frank Omatsu, Joseph Shinoda, and Fred Wada recognized the need for quality health care and established Keiro Senior HealthCare. They mortgaged their own homes and launched a fundraising campaign to start a nursing home. Thanks to many personal sacrifices and generous donations from the community, Keiro Nursing Home opened in1969. This success was soon followed by the establishment of Keiro Retirement Home, Keiro Intermediate Care Facility, South Bay Keiro Nursing Home, and most recently, The Institute for Healthy Aging at Keiro.
The vision, leadership and dedication of Keiro’s founders created an enduring legacy. Today, new generations benefit from Keiro’s continuing mission “to enhance the quality of senior life in our community.” As Keiro celebrates its 50th year of service, we thank our founders for creating an organization that continues to enrich our community and the lives of those it touches.
Please join us as we celebrate our founders and “all things Keiro” at Keiro’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Luncheon and Genki Living Expo on October 15!
